Logistics center Soesterberg | Distribution Center
Soesterbeek Blauwdruk

Defense and Rhenus Contract Logistics, together with Volantess are setting up the new logistics center for the Army in Soesterberg (LCS). The distribution center will be 42,650 m² and is intended for the flexible storage and handling of defense materials. Volantess is supervising the development of the building and site. After winning the tender, we provided all the documents needed to get approval from the defense. Construction will begin in late 2024, and the DC will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Best practices & innovation

By partnering with Rhenus and Volantess, Defense is making the best use of best practices and innovation in logistics in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the new DC. We joined forces to design a logistics layout with a building around it. Rhenus conceived the logistics process based on the demand specification and worked out the logistics design together with Districon. In doing so, together with Denc's architect, we created an appropriate and adaptive design, allowing the logistics process to grow within the existing building volume.

Flexible growth

The building will be positioned so that trucks from opposite directions can still dock properly. LCS will be very flexible in terms of storage capacity and operation: its use can be adapted to the current rapid political changes worldwide and the related ambitions of the armed forces. And thanks to the use of a flexible floor above the docks, the office can continue to grow.

BREEAM Excellent

LCS will also be extremely sustainable: the ambition is a BREEAM Excellent certification. In addition to installing triple glass, extra-insulated overhead doors and extra-thick insulation on the walls, the roof will be weighted and reinforced to be filled with solar panels. To reduce energy consumption, heat pumps will heat the warehouse and office and switched LED lighting will be installed in the warehouse and motion sensors in the office.

Even after completion - in early 2025 - we will remain closely involved. Together with Rhenus, we take care of the maintenance and management of LCS. Volantess is responsible for all Infra (building and grounds) related matters, where we are supported by Quadrant 4.
