Juf Nienke in Amsterdam IJburg offers a balanced mix of 61 sustainable rental homes, parking spaces and a commercial plinth. Half of the homes have been allocated to mid-rent for teachers, caregivers and police. The building, constructed entirely of wood, may call itself the most sustainable and circular residential building in the Netherlands. Volantess supervised the unique project.
RAU and SeARCH Architects drew the unique and bold architecture of Juf Nienke. The building has a lively and transparent plinth, of mainly glass and wood. Above it is a varied range of housing: from a compact studio to a spacious family home. With the outdoor spaces attached to the homes, the meeting deck, the large courtyard garden and the transparent high plinth, the building breathes lots of light, air and space.
A nature-inclusive approach to building and outdoor space was chosen with Juf Nienke. This contributes to biodiversity and radiates hospitality for people, plants and animals. The green design gives plants room to grow and animals the desired nesting and hiding places. On top of the building - with a roof full of solar panels - a module has been set up as a bat hotel.
Consideration for people and nature is also included in the design and construction process. 80% of the homes' materials are reusable and fall under environmental class 1. The building is constructed with a smart circuit of prefabricated units. This limits concrete to the plinth. The factory-produced modular units built in HSB (wood frame construction) are stacked on the concrete table structure. Due to the use of a lot of wood, the building stores CO₂.
We are proud of the beautiful result achieved in close cooperation with CRCL, RAU, SeARCH Architects, Pieters bouwtechniek, DGMR, Hazenberg and Barli.
