A sustainable warehouse for Rhenus

Rhenus Son III | Distribution center

Volantess - Projects - Rhenus Son - Blueprint

Volantess successfully contributed to the expansion of an existing distribution center in Son en Breugel for RHENUS, commissioned by DOKVAST. The first phase of this ambitious project, covering 47,300 m², was completed in early 2017. The second phase, which added another 35,800 m² to the distribution center, was completed in October 2022. These expansions will allow the center to operate more efficiently and meet the region's growing logistics needs.

Best practices & innovation

Because of the previous projects we have built for Rhenus, we know each other's wishes and requirements. The office was given a contemporary industrial look by interior designer Atelier Tellez, and the building design was provided by Heembouw Architects, both under the supervision of Volantess employees. The warehouse has a BREEAM Outstanding certification and is thoroughly sustainable. The built-up area concerns the former Betonson site, therefore a brownfield was used for this new building and no new building land was developed. The floors in the warehouse are completely superflat, commissioned by Rhenus, given their desire to be able to automate towards the future and thus be as flexible as possible.

Flexible growth

The expansion was built against the back of the existing building. By already taking this expansion into account in the first phase, the operations of Rhenus were able to continue unhindered, without being (over)bothered by the construction activities. The initial design of the overall plan took into account separate entrances for freight traffic between the two phases. As a result, there has been no increased risk in the existing loading zone even during construction. Freight traffic and passenger traffic are separated behind the gate on the Phase 2 site, making it impossible for passenger traffic to simply enter the loading pit.

BREEAM OUTSTANDING

Phase 1 had already been built and delivered under BREEAM conditions, whereby an 'Outstanding' certificate was obtained. The expansion which Volantess supervised also managed to obtain an 'Outstanding' certificate. The sustainable measures concern the roof which is fully equipped with a solar system. At the site of the expansion is a total of 3.6MWP, with which the building is completely self-sufficient and a surplus remains for the market.

Other measures include heat pumps for heating the warehouse, the VAS and the office. Also, these pumps serve to cool the office. With this, the building is completely gasless and is only electrically powered. On the consumption side, we have ensured the lowest possible consumption by applying LED lighting which switches automatically as much as possible and in parts.
